Defilement arising amidst sutra recitation, what to do?

If defilement arising amidst sutra recitation, turn to eye text with intent,

pronounce aloud whilst listening, and, if defilement persisting, point at

text with finger, read out word for word, retrieve thought that took flight,

and concentrate attention once more.

At times, though, we may be so conversant with the text that we no

longer need to even look it. Concentrate mind and thought nonetheless,

think about the text being recited, and allow the outflow of every word

and sentence from mind to mouth and then to ear. Such is an effective

method to disperse defilement.
