If unexpectedly alarmed in sitting meditation, what to do?

Practice sitting meditation as a set routine and, equally important,

stay clear of potential surprises. Then again, things like phone calls,

doorbells, noises from television and radio, or barking dogs just might

occur. At that, the stricken meditator needs to open mouth and gently

release heat from within. No rushing, no puffing. It is because being

unexpectedly alarmed in sitting meditation hastens heartbeat and

pulse. Opening mouth to release heat then, slowly rubbing hands,

and mildly twisting waist can redirect attention, readjust lightness

and peace already generating—all of them for safety.
