The three groups of pure precepts, trividhanisilani in Sanskrit and san
ju jing jie in Chinese transliteration, are, namely, the precepts covering
all rules and ceremonies, precepts covering all acts of virtue, and
precepts covering the welfare of all living beings, as expounded below:
First, precepts covering all rules and ceremonies, not committing any
wrongdoings such as killing, stealing, engaging in sexual misconduct,
lying, and consumption of intoxicants;
Second, precepts covering all acts of virtue, committing all things to the
benefit of another such as embracing sympathy, being responsible, and
doing public good; and
Third, precepts covering the welfare of the sentients, that is, all living
beings, tending to them and benefiting them.
